Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, totally worn out and screaming,
"WOO HOO, what a ride!"

It's been such a busy week and the weather has been gorgeous so I haven't spent much time inside. I'm way behind with blogging but I've enjoyed lots of sunshine so it's a good excuse!

Today is my youngest child's 19th birthday. Where has the time gone? It's so cliche but so true. My feisty little ball of energy with the adorable grin has grown to be such a fine young man and we are so very proud of him. He still has that grin too!

Happy birthday handsome! Your mom loves you.

Happy birthday to my littlest boy

It's 12:01 on March 24th so that makes it official. My littlest boy is now 16. *sigh* I guess "boy" and "16" don't really go together very well, especially if you ask a 16 year-old boy but I'm the mom and I'm writing this so I get to say it. I won't get to say it much more anyway. My kids are now 20, 18 and 16 so I suppose young man is a better term. I still feel like a kid myself so I'm having a hard time believing that they have really been around that many years.

My spring baby, born only a week after a major storm dumped 3 feet of snow on our town. Since all of my kids were born before their due date I had several friends offer to get my to the hospital by 4 wheel drive, snowmobile, snowplow, or whatever it took if I needed to go then. Fortunately I didn't need to. You arrived at just the right time and we came home from the hospital with less snow on a gorgeous sunny day.

Being the youngest you've been the baby but you've also grown up the fastest having two brothers to follow. And follow you did except when you were leading. You were fearless and fast. Your little legs were a blur. You broke your arm twice (within six months!) before you were five. Nothing slowed you down or held you back and your gorgeous curls and sweet, sweet smile didn't hurt when you were charming people. And charm you did. Wherever I would take you someone would always greet you by name. I usually didn't know them but they knew you because they had seen you at a ball game, knew your brothers, watched you speed by in your tiny Batman roller skates... you made an impression.

Oh so quickly you went from riding in your Little Tyke plastic car to preparing for your driver's permit. In a few months it will be your license. While it's nice for you all to be able to drive yourself to all of your activities I will miss our time together in the car. I enjoy our one-on-one chats when we drive back and forth. It gives me a few rare moments to catch up on your day, your homework, your life. And you don't roll your eyes when I ask you a question or grunt a reply instead of an answer as is often the case with teenagers. I may not get a lot of details but you talk, you listen (kind of) and we laugh.

My youngest, my little boy, my baby is now 16 and a tall, funny, kind and very handsome young man. For me it's bittersweet. The time is going too fast but you and your brothers are the best thing that's ever happened to me and I'm so very proud you're mine. I love you littlest boy.

(This is a post that I started back in March and it just didn't seem right. I stopped and started it several times. But now when I look back at it, it's exactly what I wanted to say.)

This was such a fun contest! I loved reading all of your comments about your favorite birthday traditions and gifts. There were so many touching comments. I hope you had fun writing them. If you haven't read what everyone had to say, check them out. They are sure to make you smile.

Thank you also for all of your kind birthday wishes. I don't usually bring it up or do much to celebrate because I have more fun doing for others on their day. I'm more comfortable giving than receiving. My husband just reminded me of that when I drilled it through his head that I didn't want anything again this year. We haven't exchanged gifts for the last several years except small, personal items. Well, that's the game plan anyway. My husband doesn't stick to that very well and he gives great gifts. I really, really appreciate it but I truthfully don't want anything and we need to spend our money on other things. I feel terrible when I don't get him anything for his birthday and then a few months later he gets me something. Not fair. He was better this year and almost stuck to the plan. He gave me a goody bag with nail polish, body lotion, foot lotion and some sweet cards. I told you he was thoughtful!

I also appreciate that my mom has my kids clean the yard and the porches each spring as their gift to me. That is my favorite gift even though they aren't crazy about it. Hubby did ask the boys if they would like to chip in for me to go for a hair appointment. I would prefer they not spend money on me but boy did I need to have my hair done! I went for my new spring "do" and got a hair cut and highlights. I had been sick all week and wasn't able to do much but I dragged myself to that salon. It had been a long winter and my hair could verify it. I wasn't missing that appointment, no way! And my mom is still making my kids clean the yard (hopefully). Woo hoo! They still called from their various weekend activities and wished me a happy birthday and told me they loved me. (*sniff, sniff*) Without force! That's huge for teenage boys, at least at my house. And after a day of special messages from family and friends I got to enjoy a quiet dinner out with my hubby last Saturday. It can't get much better than that! Happy birthday to me.

Birthday Contest!

This is my birthday week so I'm giving presents! I hope there are a lot of mystery fans out there because this is for two James Patterson books, Run For Your Life and The 8th Confession. I can't wait to read these! Patterson books are always a quick read with lots of twists and turns. The perfect book to take to my hammock!

Run For Your Life also by Michael Ledwidge
A calculating killer who calls himself The Teacher is taking on New York City, killing the powerful, the arrogant, the don't-give-a-darnst-about-anyone rich. For some New Yorkers it seems that the rich were getting what they deserve at last. For New York's social elite, it is a call to chaos and terror. The Teacher's message to the wealthy is clear: remember your manners or suffer the consequences! Detective Mike Bennett is assigned the case. Managing the pressure from his Commissioner, the Mayor, and the New York media would be enough for anyone, but Mike also has to care for his 10 children-who are all under 12 and who all have the flu! Detective Bennett discovers a secret pattern in the Teacher's lessons-and realizes he has just hours to save New York from the greatest disaster in its history. From the #1 bestselling author who introduced readers to Alex Cross and the Women's Murder Club-comes the continuation of his newest, electrifying series. Run for Your Life is his most heart-stopping thriller yet. (from Hatchette Books)

The 8th Confession (The Women's Murder Club)
also by Maxine Paetro
When a preacher with a message of hope for the homeless is found brutally executed, reporter Cindy Thomas knows the story could be huge. Probing deeper into the victim's history, she discovers he may not have been as saintly as everyone thought... Rich, beautiful, and powerful, Isa and Ethan Bailey were living in the spotlight as San Francisco's perfect couple--until they are found dead in their luxurious home. As the hunt for two criminals tests the skills of the entire Women's Murder Club, sparks begin to fly between Detective Lindsay Boxer and her partner, Rich Conklin, making it difficult to stay focused on the case. The electrifying new chapter in the Women's Murder Club series, THE 8TH CONFESSION serves up the mile-a-minute twists that only James Patterson can deliver. (from Hatchette Books)

For my birthday boy...

Happy birthday to my oldest son. As I glance at the clock it was 20 years ago today, almost to the minute that he was finally born. I say finally because even though he was almost three weeks early, I had been in labor for 10 days by the time I had him. My doctor decided that he would be fine if he was born at that time so they wouldn't try to prevent it but they weren't going to help things along either. The longer I could last the bigger he would get so we let nature take it's course. For me it felt like a long course. I had no clue what real labor was. It was painful enough for me and I was begging my baby to be born. It felt like forever but all 5 lbs. 10 oz. of his tiny but healthy body finally made it's way into the world and the next 20 years have flown by in the blink of an eye. I know it's a cliche but it's so true. Where does the time go?

His personality has been very much like his birth, stubborn, pushy, resistant to following directions, glorious, determined, on his terms, magnificent, loving, gorgeous, stubborn and stubborn. He was our first child, the first grandchild and one of the three most beautiful, amazing children ever born. (Can you guess how many kids I have?) He is so handsome and charming with his sweet grin. He's gotten away with a lot of things over the years because of that grin. He is an amazing athlete and very bright although school has never been a priority for him and many report cards have reflected that. The first three years of high school were a constant battle over his grades and homework. I have several bald patches on my head that I owe to him. I was constantly tearing my hair out. He was also the typical oldest child and bossed and bullied his younger brothers constantly. (I'm so glad I never did that!)

But something happened during his senior year. He started to change. Friends had reassured me that it would get better, we would survive the teen years. Although I definitely looked forward to that I didn't want to wish the time away. Their childhoods were already zipping past at warp speed. As he really began to enjoy his last year in high school he also became more mature. He has a nice group of friends and they are close classmates. Graduation was very emotional and bittersweet. We were thrilled he had graduated but so sad to see it happen. And although his college was only two hours away, taking him there was one of the saddest days of my life. Such a huge milestone for all of us. I missed him terribly but I was happy for his new found independence. This was an important time in his life and I would do anything to make it a great one.

So something more happened that first year. He began to appreciate his home and his family. He called home just to say hi. He replied with "I love you too" at the end of our chats. He was more helpful when he was on break. (I said more helpful. He's still a slob!) He even offered to do things without being asked. When he transferred schools and decided to work full time for the summer and fall semester to save up some money he returned home to live. I was thrilled. Especially with his younger brother leaving for college that year. Two sons leaving home one year after the other was going to be agony for me. It's only a ten minute drive to his work and will take even less time to drive to his campus when the next semester starts. He loved having his own place but he will again soon. He will have a lifetime of utility bills and mortgage payments. I was proud that he chose wisely and even more proud when he became a responsible worker. This is his first full time job and he is very dedicated. He's never late and he works hard. He's even saved some money. He calls home before he leaves to see if we need milk or if his youngest brother wants a ride. He calls if he won't be home for dinner. Now, I did say more responsible. He's still a young man and he acts like one. He still argues with his brothers and fights over the remote control. He still leaves his dirty clothes on the floor and his dirty dishes on the coffee table. He takes too long in the bathroom and doesn't notice when the dog dish is empty. But I am grateful for even those issues. Because in the grand scheme of things, they are so small. And I know I will actually miss even those things someday.

Happy birthday to my son, my sweet baby, my little boy, my young man. You and your brothers are my everything. I love you with all my heart.
