Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, totally worn out and screaming,
"WOO HOO, what a ride!"

Our spring babies!

Last month we noticed that a bird had built a perfectly formed nest in the grapevine wreath hanging on the side of our house. Although there is a muddy mess on the siding we left it alone to see what would happen. About a week later there were four blue eggs.

In a very short time there were four teeny, tiny, scrawny, bald, ugly baby birds. Really ugly. But their mama still loved them.
After only a week those ugly babies are now cute little birdies with feathers. The nest is looking a little crowded so we're thinking they may need siderails on their nest. The mama probably isn't going to take us up on the offer though. Safety first!

  4. Wow, those blue eggs are gorgeous! We had messy sparrows build a nest in the eaves once, so while we didn't get to see the eggs we did get to watch the babies grow (sort of...we causght glimpses whenever they poked their heads out

  5. WOW those eggs were a beautiful shade of blue. Aren't you glad to have been picked as their first house?
Congrats! :) enjoy the bird poopies.. My mama has swallow nests on her large front porch so that is interesting to behold..they get ticked off when we go outside.

  6. Awwwwwwwwwww, how sweet. They build their nests in the weirdest places sometimes. I wouldn't think that would have been sheltered enough but the mama did.

  7. These are robin eggs and we have ton of them around here. We have lots of nests built all around our house and property too but this was the first one in the wreath. They build them in the eaves of the porches, in the crook of the posts... we've even had them on the pedals of the boys' bikes when they have them hanging upside down on the side of our shed! And there is plenty of that nasty bird poop too. Gross.

  10. Wow, they do pick some weird places to build a nest. The only nests we have had here are cardinals' nests. They built one in our hedge right outside the pool cage and we watched them every day. It was fascinating. One of the babies fell out of the nest and the parents were going berserk flying back and forth between the hedge and a big tree. Hubby went out with 2 pieces of cardboard and picked up the baby and gently put it back in the nest. We were afraid the mother would reject it but it was ok. They don't stick around long. I think they were about 10 days old and they had one day of flying lessons and then they were gone.

  13. I'm amazed that a robin was able to make that nest, lay the eggs and feed the birds in that wreath. It must be quite thick! We have a line of bird's nests down by our lagoon; we usually get Redwing Blackbirds in them, but we got quite a few Violet Green Swallows much to our surprise. They are all flying now, enjoying our nightly flock of moths, and hopefully also the tremendous number of mosquitos we are getting this year. Waaaay too many!! Now if the bats would just discover our neat bat house, maybe we won't have to scratch so much!

  16. What cute little birds! Thanks so much for posting them Wrighty. We have a few birds here, but they just hang out in the hedge beside the lawn. Mostly grackles, but you do see the occasional robin.

  17. I've heard that hay works really well underneath nests to cushion the baby birds if they fall (so that they don't die). Thanks for sharing the photos!
