Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, totally worn out and screaming,
"WOO HOO, what a ride!"

So I was just wondering…

woman wondering

I’ve noticed the topic of awards has been brought up a few places lately like Pudgy Penguin Perusals and The Bumbles Blog. I know that every time I’ve received an award from fellow bloggers I’ve been thrilled and honored to even be noticed. Sometimes I can’t believe anyone but me is reading my blog! The awards are clever and a friendly way to get to know each other. I use to post all of my awards but they took up space and were slow to load on my dial-up connection.  I may just create a page and post a link to it. While I haven’t kept up with them lately, I do thank the sender immediately and put a lot of thought into who I’m passing them on to.

While they are very much appreciated they are also a lot of work. Sometimes I wonder if the person I forward them to will be happy to receive them or am I just adding one more thing to their To Do list? And is it rude of me to decide not to post them on my sidebar anymore?  What do you think about blog awards and what do you do with them? Do you have any clever ideas to share?

  1. Another great question...

For me when i get an award (which i love getting like you said its nice to see that its not only me reading my blog) I always try to make a post with the award to thank the person and share it.

I don't have it on my side bar either because it can slow the page from loading.

But I am thinking I need to do something else so that people can see them I just don't know how though.

  2. Debbie, always thinking! ..and I was just thinking the same thing last night. I LOVE getting them and do think even adults need a pat on the back but you are right...they take up lots of space and time. I have 3 now I have felt guilty about because I keep putting them off another day to hand out as I have so many posts a day. I took mine and put them in a slide show so they are still there but again, for some, it takes too much time to load. I think a post with all of them and a link might be good. I did that with my current giveaways but still have them on my sidebar. I have a clock you can click on to see the cover of the book and a link to get to the post to enter, etc...but wonder if anyone other than me even looks at it. I don't know the answer...but I hate to take them away or say as some "I DO NOT ACCEPT Awards"...I like that people care and when I first started in January, I longed to get an award and so when you are new, it is even more important. Perhaps, we could miniaturize them like the Google Friend Connect pictures? But I don't know how to do that either. So all that to say, I agree with you but have no clever idea that I know how to implement..other than the slide show....but I just know that out there someone has a great idea right now...so if I miss it, please let me know what you come up with! Have a good day!

  3. Yes, a very good question. I do LOVE to get me an award. My heart gets all fluttery when I get a messsage or see my name on someone else's blog passing an award on to me.

I don't necessarily find the awards too much work (especially in the month of November posting every day and all that), but sometimes it takes me a while to get to posting them; then I feel bad because someone thought enough of me to give me an award.

I would NEVER tell people to NOT give me an award. For me, the work comes in trying figure our who to give the award to. I mean, how do I pick and choose from so many of the great blogs that I read? And, when I do choose one, will that blogger be as thrilled as me? Or will he or she be annoyed at a silly little award?

Yes, I know, I worry too much about what someone else will think of an award. I really shouldn't care. I really should just pass it on and not worry whether or not the other person will be as thrilled as me.

That being said, I so have an award waiting for my acceptance...should get that post up.

Oh and I typically just show the award on that post. I know others have pages for their awards, but I just like to have it on that post.

  4. Hi there! When I received my first award (okay, I only have 3 or 4...), I was SO excited. Like you, I was happy to see others were reading and apparantly enjoying my blog! Sometimes you wonder, right? I promptly displayed it on my sidebar. That said, the next one that came got me thinking....I've seen sights with gobs and gobs of awards. While they are lovely and speak to how highly they are regarded, I don't always want to site and stare at them nor have to the time to wait for the page to FINALLY load. My solution was this....I created a "trophy room". The latest award is visible in my sidebar, and then links to a post of all the awards I have received. This way I have a "room" I can visit to review the "blogger love" I've received and others can view it too if they choose. =0)

  5. Ohh what a good question - I have mine listed on the sidebar and yes I appreciated each and every one, but they are taking up a lot of space and do slow things up. I'll be watching to see if anyone comes up with a good solution!

  6. When I moved my blog, I left behind almost all of the awards...I wanted to simplify my sidebar! They're fun, but they do get to be work...and then when you get awarded something twice, it always seems awkward to say thanks, but I'm not going to do this as I've already done it.

I've gotten to the point where I just say thanks on their blog, and leave it at that.

They do seem to have tapered off, though.

  7. I love receiving an award and always write a post, but I don't have them on my sidebar or on a separate page. You can click on awards in my subject cloud and it will bring all of my posts up.
They can be work, but I now only pass along an award to one blog. Makes it more special and easier for me :)

  8. Thanks for continuing the Awards discussion! I have never displayed any Award we have been fortunate enough to receive on our blog permanently - we always just do a post about them. We use that as an opportunity to thank the giver and shine a spotlight on one particulary blogger who we feel was especially suited to the award next. And we always make sure to point out that the person we are passing it along to is in no way obligated to do anything with it. That seems to let people off the hook who don't enjoy/have time to dedicate a post about it, but they can still feel acknowledged. Every single one has always thanked us in our comments - regardless of what they choose to do with it.

  9. I love getting awards but I am terrible at passing them along or acknowledging them in a timely manner. So it is a bit of a conundrum. ;-P

  10. This is still such a tricky subject, isn't it? It's hard to know what to do without hurting someone's feelings or looking ungrateful, and I know that everyone does truly appreciate the thought behind the awards.

  11. I love receiving awards but I've taken to writing up an awards post only once a month or when I have a few awards to announce. I like a clean look to my blog, so I've moved the awards to a separate page. I totally understand the importance of passing along awards, but I hate to assign them because I'm worried about hurting someone's feelings. In the end, it's a personal decision.

  12. I think getting awards is a lovely idea and when I have received an award it's a really nice feeling. I don't mind passing on the award as this is a nice way to show that person that I have noticed their blog and I visit often. I don't put the image on my sidebar but I have created a separate link so if people want to take a look at my awards they can. I only do a post about new awards I receive. If it's an award I have already received before then I will add the person/blog to that post. I agree with Beth F that it is a personal decision how we deal with awards.
